Celebrate the Small Things

Celebrate the Small Things is a weekly bloghop now hosted by Lexa Cain. The idea is to post anything you want to celebrate from the last week, no matter how small.

This week I'm celebrating:

- Croissants fresh from the oven - yum!

- I gave up on the last book I was reading (Pretty Monsters by Kelly Link) - I got half way through before realising that I just didn't like the writing style. So then I moved on to another book, and finished it in a day! Saint Anything, by one of my favourite authors Sarah Dessen. I love her books.

- I saw the ENT specialist on Tuesday, and he reckons I'll recover from my inner ear problem soon. He's given me some exercises to speed up my recovery, so here's hoping they work!

- For everyone who wondered about the 4 hour cake last week, it's traditional here in England to have a fruit cake at Christmas. They take much longer to bake than regular cakes, and you have to make them a few weeks before Christmas so the cake can mature. Here's the recipe I used, if you want to see for yourselves :)

  1. Most fruitcakes here would simply make good doorstops. I'm sure yours will be much better!
Life is too short to read bad books. Glad you found one you enjoyed.

  2. Hoping you recover soon from your inner ear problem!
I like Sarah Dessen, too, so I'll check out Saint Anything.
    Have a great weekend!

  3. You're turning into quite the baker! The fruit cake over there is so much better than here. I bet your apartment smelled heavenly. And good for you for throwing that book aside! There's already too many good books out there. No reason to waste time on the bad ones.

  4. Life's too short to read books you're not enjoying. I'm close to dropping the one I'm reading now because after 150 pages, I'm still bored. But so many people have raved about how good it is, I figure I need to persevere a little further.

  5. Croissants fresh from the oven . . . you cant beat that to start the day, and that is how I plan to start mine tomorrow morning . . .

I am not a fan of traditional Christmas cake, but there one or two members of the family that do.

  6. I've always loved fruitcakes! I'm impressed you make your own. I can't get them here, but an Italian bakery sells gingerbread during Dec, so I'm looking forward to that. I hope your inner ear problem goes away. I had positional vertigo for a year, and it only went away when I started limiting my liquid intake - rather hard to do when living in a hot desert. Wishing you a lovely weekend!

  7. My great grandmother had a wonderful recipe for "applesauce cake" that was actually a fruit cake. I used to beg her to make it at Christmas and your post brought back that memory. So, of course, I had to check out the recipe! It sounds great. Yummmmmmm....

    Have a GREAT week!

  8. Croissants — definitely yummy. I don't think I've ever had a real traditional fruit cake. Baking one sounds like quite an art form. I'll have to try one someday. Hope the exercises clear up your ear problem!

  9. Mm-mm, sounds delicious.

I'm in the middle of re-reading one of Dessen's older stories. Most of her books haven't been my cup of tea, but the ones that have really resonate with me.
